Nominations & Elections Process

for the Beacon Board of Directors


The Beacon Governance Committee has presented a slate of candidates for election to serve on the Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning January 2018 and ending December 2020. The nominees are:


Jory Barrad   

Jory Barrad is an innovative senior executive leader, relationship builder and manager with rich experience in for-profit and nonprofit sectors, including nonprofit organizations in child and family services, health and human services, for profit organizations in B2B products and services, professional services, and consumer products and services. Jory is passionate about delivering solutions in fundraising, marketing and communications, PR, general management, and enjoys helping individuals and organizations connect for mutually beneficial opportunities.  Jory currently serves as Vice President-Development and Marketing for the Village, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing vital services for children and families in our communities. Jory has also worked for Bancroft and several well-known consumer products companies prior to entering the nonprofit sector. Jory also serves on the Board of Directors of Charitable Ticket Network, is a member of the AFP-GPC Marketing Committee, and enjoys mentoring both young people and colleagues whenever possible. Jory greatly enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons.

Jory has been a member of Beacon since 2008, and he is running for his second term on the Board.  Jory currently serves on the Executive Committee as Secretary of the Board, and heads the Audit Committee. 


Lynn Hoban

Lynn Hoban is an accomplished marketing professional, with 25+ years of progressive experience.  She has contributed to more than 50 client businesses spanning many categories including consumer retail, financial services, professional services, healthcare, education, hospitality and non-profit. Lynn’s greatest strength is her ability to get things done and to make things happen. She is a leader and an innovator with outstanding interpersonal skills and a strong desire to help others succeed. 

Lynn has been an active member of Beacon since 2011, and is running for her second term on the Board.  Lynn has served as an integral leader and active Beacon member, contributing as a new member Guide and a working member of Beacon’s Marketing Committee.  In 2016, Lynn served as a member of the Board’s Executive Committee and as a member of Beacon’s Rebranding Task Force.  In 2017, Lynn served as a Board Liaison for the NJ South Subgroup, the Sales & Marketing Subgroup and Beacon’s Marketing Committee.  



Jim Van Horn

Jim Van Horn leads his own consulting practice specializing in Executive/Management Coaching and Board & Organization Development. Prior to his current work, he spent a combined 27 years in Corporate Human Resources at Unisys, Foamex International and the School District of Philadelphia.  He progressed to the Exec. VP positions at Foamex International and the School District. Jim has served as an elected Public School Board Member for 20 years, of which 13 years were as President.  He currently is President, KenCrest Services Board. He has been active for many years as a leader in PSPS in both the HR Mentoring and “LAN” programs.

Jim has been a member since November 2016 and immediately got involved with the Non-Profit subgroup where he successfully coordinated the Sponsorship effort for their Spring, 2017 event.  As a result, Jim was asked to Chair the Sponsorship program that proved to be very successful for our Beacon 15th Anniversary Event.


Selection Criteria & Process

Our selection criteria are based on the criteria established in the bylawsValues & Code of Conduct, and as guided by the Board of Directors. Those criteria include active Beacon membership with the organization, involvement in Beacon subgroups and/or committee activities, demonstrated leadership within Beacon or other nonprofit organizations, the perceived ability to work well with other members of the Board of Directors and demonstrated ability to meet the skill sets suggested by the Beacon leadership.

The Governance Committee reviews applications, interviews candidates and determines the list of nominees presented to the membership for election. 


Election Process

Members of the Board are elected by the members of Beacon by electronic ballot; the election will take place November 13-15, 2017; and results will be announced November 20 on the website. Those elected will serve a term of three years beginning January 1, 2018 and ending December 31, 2020. The Beacon Board of Directors is comprised of 9-12 individuals whose terms are staggered to provide both continuity and fresh perspectives with each new term. Following completion of one three-year term, members are eligible for nomination to a second three-year term. Once elected, the Board goes through a nominations process and elects its officers (Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary) for the year.

Board Roles and Responsibilities:

Members of the Board will:


  • Have the opportunity to work with peers and colleagues to establish the policies, vision and goals for Beacon and help the association grow and thrive;
  • Provide insight and input to help Beacon members find value and achieve their professional and personal goals;
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to monitor progress toward Beacon’s strategic goals and contribute to establishing and revising strategies as appropriate; and
  • Contribute to ensuring that the Board fulfills its corporate duties of care, loyalty and obedience to the members and to Beacon in accordance with governing documents and policies.


The Board of Directors in 2018 will hold approximately six in-person meetings, tentatively scheduled for the fourth Monday of January, February, April, June, September and November from 6:00 to 8:00 pm., and a December meeting immediately preceding the holiday social event. (A final schedule for Board meeting times and dates will be determined based on the best dates for the members selected as well as checking against holidays and other conflicts.) The Board may also meet by conference call when business decisions require such phone meetings.

In addition to the routine business meetings, Board members will have an orientation session to establish common understanding of key organizational matters and standards for operation and communication, as well as a meeting focused on the mission, vision and strategic plan goals to ratify/suggest changes as appropriate. On average, directors can expect to spend 8 to 10 hours monthly on Board activities and preparation. Between meetings, members of the Board will:


  • Receive, review and evaluate documents intended to keep the Board apprised of organizational performance, events and activities, and issues that may require Board attention or oversight;
  • Attend Beacon major events and activities and meetings of committees and subgroups as appropriate (generally at least one per month) to remain informed, represent Beacon, and carry out specific work as assigned;
  • Seek out opportunities to gather information from members, staff, allied groups, media, etc., so that the Board’s decisions are informed by available knowledge/data/environmental factors relevant to its decisions;
  • Volunteer/be willing to serve on committees, task forces or working groups, and/or as a member or Board liaison, to carry out the work of Beacon;

Demonstrate the leadership qualities appropriate to Board membership by supporting decisions of the Board, being an enthusiastic representative of Beacon to internal and external audiences, and engaging in principled and robust dialogue to help the Board reach good decisions that will serve the Association and its members.
