A Conversation with Jessica Durrie

Co-Founder of Small World Coffee

Success in a Starbucks World

In April we’ll continue our series of conversations with Princeton business leaders with Small World Coffee co-founder, Jessica Durrie.

Small World Coffee opened its doors on December 22nd, 1993 and was an almost instant success with lines of customers waiting to order a drink.

Throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium, Small World Coffee has brought high quality espresso-based beverages, brewed coffee, and other treats to the Princeton public.

25 years and five espresso machines later, they still focus on the traditional values they started with: hard work, attention to detail, a community-centric business philosophy, and producing precision roasted coffee.

We’ll talk with Jessica about the challenges of running a successful business in a highly competitive industry, up against giants like Starbucks; how to build a strong company values and a culture of employee engagement; managing a Millennial workforce; and creating operational systems fostering business literacy, leadership and communication skills; all while maintaining a top-notch customer experience.

Join us at our Host Sponsor, Caliper, for networking, light appetizers from Olives Princeton and, of course, our conversation with Jessica!

Jessica Durrie has spent her career building hospitality environments where customers and employees alike feel a strong sense of community. In 1993, she co-founded Small World Coffee, two high-volume cafes and a wholesale coffee roaster in Princeton, New Jersey.

Born in Berkeley, California and raised abroad in Italy, Australia, and Brazil, Durrie's upbringing left her with an abiding curiosity about different cultures and cuisines, these interests brought her to Cornell’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management where she studied Entrepreneurship in the food and beverage industry.

Durrie's honors include the Princeton Chamber of Commerce 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year and the YWCA's 2011 Tribute to Women. She has served on the Art's Council of Princeton board and is currently a member of Princeton University's Art Museum Community Leadership Council.
