Industry and Academia- Forging A New Future for the Life Sciences

Presenter:  Dr. Kenneth Barbee - Professor and Interim Director, Drexel University School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems

There’s been tremendous change in the health care landscape and there are even greater changes to come.  How will the life sciences meet this challenge and ensure that it remains a vigorous and innovative contributor to global health?    At the beginning is usually a fruitful place to start.  For the life sciences, that place is academia and the basic sciences.

On June 28, Dr. Ken Barbee will discuss how Drexel envisions its role in the life sciences industry and how the relationship between academia and the industry is changing in exciting ways.  You won’t want to miss this presentation.  You’ll learn not only about important developments in academia and the life sciences industry, but also how GPSEG members can engage with Drexel as it implements its strategic initiatives.   Imagine it.  You could have a front row seat for a dynamic discussion and also one at the forefront of transformation in the life sciences industry!

Please register early for this important and exciting program.   GPSEG Life Sciences programs tend to sell out and our next program won’t be until the fall.

About the Presenter

Kenneth Barbee, PhD, is a Professor and Interim Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems at Drexel University. He received his bachelor’s degree in engineering science and mechanics from the University of Tennessee in 1986 and his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. He joined the faculty at Drexel in 1998 and in 2014, he became interim Director of the School and PI of the Coulter-Drexel Translational Research Partnership Program. Dr. Barbee is recognized for his contributions to a wide variety of fields related to mechanics and transport at the cellular level.

The biomedical engineering school was founded in 1961 as the Nation’s first Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute.  Since then, its faculty, staff, students, and alumni have forged synergistic relationships with a network of partners, bridging academia, industry and government agencies to realize a collective and substantial impact regionally, nationally, and internationally.  The School has over 800 students across its BS, MS, and PhD programs and over 35 core faculty engaged in interdisciplinary research across engineering, physics, mathematics, life sciences, and medical specialties, including with several medical schools and hospitals in the Philadelphia area.
