Life Science Group Meeting

Tuesday, November 17, 2015

7:30am - 10:30am

Why is VUCA Leadership important for your career and your organization?

The life sciences industry is under attack and it is constantly changing and evolving in order to remain competitive.  It’s Volatile:  mergers and acquisitions, changing government landscape, Presidential elections; it’s Uncertain:  the cost of drugs, the changing horizon of health benefits; it’s Complex:  globalization, who is going to pay?; and it’s Ambiguous:  issues can come and go with swings in regulatory decisions like biosimilars.

Executives in the life science industry must learn how to lead in a VUCA environment: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity: This military acronym emerged in the 1990s to describe the capability to engage situations marked by change and challenges. For leaders, the doctrine underscores the importance of strategic decision-making, readiness planning, risk management, and situational problem-solving.

You will learn four key leadership strategies to help guide you and your staff through this “perpetual whitewater” of change:

. Vision – an intent that seeks to create a clear future state

. Understanding – why you should stop, look and listen to the characteristics at play

. Clarity – how to make sense of the chaos

. Agility – a collaborative, nimble approach to rapid change

After a brief presentation, Helen and Matt will facilitate a case study-based breakout session to assist you in developing your own ideas about VUCA leadership and how to apply them to navigate your company’s circumstances!
