The Wistar is Open for Business!
As an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institute the Wistar plans to redefine the model for partnership in innovation by pioneering an open and streamlined approach to early stage discovery and targeted research.
Dr. Altieri will share the Wistar’s vision for becoming one of the world’s most important and productive engines of transformative biomedical discovery. The Wistar wants to be known for its distinctive brand of science – “Wistar Science” -- that is original, nimble, and courageous; to be sought after by other discovery and translation-focused organizations as a partner of choice in advancing new health discoveries.
An Informative Presentation and Discussion Led By:
Dario C. Altieri, M.D.
Chief Executive Officer
Director, The Wistar Institute Cancer Center
Chief Scientific Officer
Robert and Penny Fox Distinguished Professor
Dr. Altieri joined Wistar in 2010 as director of Wistar’s National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, and as Wistar’s first chief scientific officer. Since then, he has galvanized Wistar’s strength in cancer research, recruiting world-class investigators and charting a new path for translational medicine that will accelerate the progress from basic research to clinical trials with partners in industry and medicine. His own research efforts currently focus on advancing a drug developed in his laboratory toward clinical testing in patients with advanced prostate cancer.
The Wistar Institute, an international leader in basic biomedical research, announced the opening of its new $100 million research building last fall. The seven-story Robert and Penny Fox Tower will usher in a new era of team science and solidify Wistar’s future at the forefront of cancer research, genetics and vaccine development. Wistar is the nation’s first independent biomedical research institute and was Philadelphia’s first NCI-designated Cancer Center.
